James Glock
Chair of HR/NY's Benefits SIG
"I joined HR/NY for two primary reasons: to network with other professionals, and to learn more about Human Resources from a broader perspective. When I attended my first HR/NY event six years ago, I was impressed with the enthusiasm of the members. I volunteered to help with programs, and then got involved with the Benefits Special Interest Group. It has been very rewarding to share my experience as a benefits professional, and lend insight to HR Managers. In turn, I have really enjoyed gaining a larger perspective of everything that impacts the HR profession. It has also helped me appreciate all the different issues that organizations face, as well as the creative solutions to help solve them. HR/NY has been a great part of enhancing my career development and has made me a more well rounded professional."

Barbara Safani
HR/NY Board Director
"As a career strategist, my clients rely on me for the most current information on recruiting and compensation trends. I learn a lot by attending HR/NY's educational seminars on these topics, but I also gain valuable information by interacting with the HR professionals 'in the trenches.' Through relationships I have formed with colleagues via volunteer committees, I am able to get the 'skinny' on what's going on in the areas of HR that are important to my clients. I meet professionals from all different HR disciplines, industries, and company sizes. The conversations are always engaging and enlightening, and most of all fun. When I need information on an HR topic that I know will be important to my clients, I know I can find someone I have met through my volunteer efforts who can offer valuable insights, and I enjoy staying in touch with professionals that I know and trust."

Jennifer Patterson
Vice President of Programming
"While it is true that HR/NY has afforded me priceless professional growth opportunities, the real reason that I volunteer - the thing that keeps me going-is YOU! Every time I have the opportunity to interact with an HR/NY member, I come away inspired. In my experience, HR/NY members are informed on critical issues, passionate about our profession, engaged in the process of giving back to the NYC HR community, and committed to the long-term networking and relationship building approach so critical in business today. HR/NY is New York City's largest community of, and leading resource for, career-savvy HR professionals. Our members are the leaders of today and tomorrow. I am honored to volunteer with such an exceptional group of people!"

Izzy Kushner
HR/NY Board Director
"When I first joined HR/NY in 2000, I was on the heels of starting an HR and benefits consulting firm, HR Impact. I was already a member of SHRM national, and I knew that HR/NY would provide a great outlet for local networking. Over the past 10 years HR/NY has provided much more. While our firm has grown over that span, HR/NY has allowed me to be a mentor, a speaker/presenter, a SIG Chair, an Officer, and a Board member. I continue to volunteer with HR/NY because I find it to be a mutually rewarding experience, with both parties benefiting."

Barry Manus
HR/NY Senior Advisor and Orientation Committee Chair
"I realized early in my career that networking and volunteering were an important part of building my professional contacts. Shortly after volunteering for the University Relations Committee, I was asked to become the Chair of that committee; the simple act of asking to volunteer landed me in my first role on the Board.
The HR profession has been good to me and so volunteering gave me the opportunity to give back to the HR community, and to help others in my profession. Knowing you did something good for others brings an emotional uplifting that can never be matched by money or fame.
For others whom I know, volunteering directly contributed to for themselves finding new career opportunities. Volunteering is something you will value for many years to come."
